What is draw poker

You don’t have to rack your brains to know what draw poker is: it is enough to translate it to know that we are talking about poker with discards. But there is a whole world within draw poker, so let’s talk about the three most played draw poker modalities: the 5 Card Draw, the 2-7 Triple Draw and the 2-7 Single Draw Lowball.

  • 5 Card Draw.
  • 2-7 Triple Draw.
  • 2-7 Single Draw Lowball.

Five Card Draw is the classic poker game with discards. It is the most played within draw poker, and precisely for this reason when others learn how to play draw poker, this modality is taken as a reference.

In this type of game, when the blinds are placed to the dealer’s left, each player receives five-hole cards. It is the player to the left of the big blind who begins to speak and can choose to fold, call or raise. The game continues until everyone has spoken once and the bets are evened.

At the moment the first round of betting is over, is when the discard begins. Those players who wish may discard any cards they wish. They can choose to discard none, or discard all five, all but one, all but two… the range of possibilities is very wide.

In draw poker, the rules say that when that first round of discarding has occurred, the second round of betting begins. This time, it is the player just to the left of the dealer who speaks first, followed by the player to his left, and so on until the end of this round.

After this second round of betting, the cards are shown. The player with the best hand wins the pot. It is as simple as that.

It is a type of game that admits No Limit, Pot Limit and Fixed Limit modalities.

Draw poker rules

Let’s move on to another draw poker game. The rules of draw poker in the 2-7 Triple Draw mode change. Read “Deuce to Seven Triple Draw”, in this type of game it is the lowest hand that wins. These games have the particularity that the ace always counts as a high card.

This means that the best hand according to the rules of 2-7 Triple Draw poker, which are unchangeable rules, is 7-5-4-3-2.

In this game, once the dealer and blinds are posted, each player receives five cards. Whoever sits to the left of the BB begins to speak. When everyone has spoken, the first discard of the players who are still active takes place. They have before them the possibility to discard the cards they want, if they want to do so. When it is over, the game resumes and a new round of betting begins.

This mode has four betting rounds and three discarding rounds. After the last betting round, the showdown is reached, when everyone must show their cards.

How to play draw poker

As you can see, it is not enough to know what draw poker is: you have to pay attention to the rules of each specific type of game. Draw poker, with its variable rules, establishes points in common with specific particularities that you should know before you start playing.

Broadly speaking, we have already told you how to play draw poker. But, as in all forms of poker, there are games with more rhythm and action than the rest. Draw poker has in 2-7 Single Draw Lowball its action game. The rules? Identical to the 2-7 Triple Draw, with the particularity that all betting and discarding rounds are simplified here.

It is a fast game, where you have to make good use of the only discard round. After the five cards are dealt to each player, a betting round takes place. At the end of the betting round, the only discard round takes place. When the discards are finished, a final betting round and the showdown takes place, where the player with the lowest hand will emerge as the winner and win the jackpot prize.
