The straight in poker is one of the most prized and strongest figures to make up a hand, although it is also one of the most difficult to achieve. We can find several types of poker straights in the main forms of Texas Hold’Em or Omaha poker, as we are going to describe in this article. Below, we explain what the possible poker straights are, their value and the odds of them appearing. In addition, we answer some of the most frequently asked questions: Is it advisable to set up a straight draw? In poker, who wins, flush or straight? Read on for more information.

What are the types of poker flushes?

As we mentioned, there are several types of poker straights, which vary depending on their position and the value of the winning hand. The possible straights in poker are made up of a combination of 5 cards in which there are private and community cards – at least, in the most popular forms of Texas Hold’Em and Omaha Poker, which we analyse here and which are played in most events and tournaments. These are:

Royal Flush

This is the best possible hand. It is also known as a royal flush. The royal flush is made up of a total of 5 cards comprising the AS + K + Q + J + 10 + 9. It is therefore a straight flush made up of the cards with the highest value in poker. It is practically impossible for two royal flushes to appear in the same game.

Straight flush

A straight flush in poker is also known as a stratigh flush. A straight flush occurs when you get a combination of five consecutive cards of the same colour. Although the chances of it appearing are low, in the event of two straight flushes – of the same suit – competing for the pot at a table, the higher card combination wins. In the event that both were the same (a poker straight flush tie), the pot would be split.

Straight

This is the most basic straight that can be found in poker. In this case, we have a straight of numbers, but not a straight flush. It is, therefore, the straight with the lowest value in the hand, which can easily be beaten by other combinations. In the event of a tie of two straights, the winning hand would be the one with the highest values. If by chance there is a straight draw in poker, then the pot is split.

Strategy in poker: the odds of straight flushes

The likelihood of one type of straight versus another varies considerably. The higher the poker hands, the more likely you are to win. However, the percentage of the percentage to appear decreases considerably. The odds of the different straights appearing in poker are as follows:

  • Royal Flush: The probability of the royal poker straight flush (in conventional poker with 52 cards and no joker) is 0.0002%. As you can imagine, this is a very small figure, so it is highly unlikely to be seen in a game, let alone that there could be a straight draw in poker with these characteristics.
  • Straight flush: The probability of it appearing in this case is 0.002%. This is also a very small figure when compared to, for example, a pair, in which case the probability is 42.3%.
  • Straight: The normal straight has a much higher chance of appearing compared to the other straights, which is why the value of this hand is smaller. The odds, in this case, are 0.40%.

The AS, at the moment of forming a straight, can appear in two occasions, since it can be part of the highest straight: AS + K + Q + Q + J + 10; or of the lowest straight: 5 + 4 + 3 + 2 + AS. However, it can never appear in an intermediate zone to form a staircase, such as Q + K + AS + 2 + 3. This type of staircase is invalid.

Frequently asked questions about possible straights in poker

After explaining the types of straights and how likely they are to appear, it is useful to answer some of the most frequently asked questions about straights and how to play them. We’ll get to them in a moment.

Is it advisable to set up a project with a ladder?

The answer is it depends. Of course, it all depends on what cards you have in your hand and what cards have been raised as community cards. This will allow you to calculate the outs and odds to determine if your project is viable. However, remember that in the case of a royal flush and a straight flush it is very unlikely that it will appear, so we recommend that you opt for other formulas whenever you see clearer indications. Bear in mind that with a straight flush – regardless of whether it has the lowest value of all the straights – you can beat any three of a kind, two pair, pair or high card respectively, so it’s worth betting on.

In poker, who wins flush or straight?

The question of whether a straight or flush wins in poker is one of the most common questions we encounter. The answer is simple, the flush wins every time over the straight flush. However, the royal flush and the straight flush are the two highest rungs of the value of poker hands, so the royal flush and the straight flush are the two highest rungs of the value of poker hands, so the royal flush and the straight flush have an advantage over the straight flush. Note that when we talk about the flush we are talking about five cards of the same suit and not consecutive. In poker there are clubs, hearts, spades and diamonds. The odds of making a flush hand in this game are approximately 0.2%.
