What is blackjack?

Blackjack is a card game played in casinos. It is played with the English deck (with a total of 52 cards and without jokers) and its objective is to get as close as possible to the value of twenty-one -the name by which it is also known-. There are several references that date the origin of this popular game of chance and strategy to the 17th century in the region of France. In fact, at first the game was known as Vingt et Un -which means twenty-one in French-. Due to the great acceptance and popularity of gambling and betting games of the time, blackjack crossed borders and was perfectly assimilated and integrated in American casinos, where it received the name by which it is known today – its name comes from the pronunciation of the Ace and the Jack. Today this card game is popular all over the world and can be found in physical casinos, virtual casinos and cell phone applications.

How to play blackjack

The rules of blackjack are very simple, in fact, much of its popularity is due to how easy it is to understand. To play this game you must know that the final objective is to reach a value as close as possible to 21, thus beating the dealer. However, it must be taken into account that, depending on the casino, there may be two different versions – the European and the American – and that there may be some variations in the rules. Let’s see it in more detail, so that there are no doubts.

Blackjack game rules

To play blackjack you need between 4 and 7 players. The basic rules of this popular card game are as follows:

  1. The dealer deals two face cards to each player. This is the opponent to all players, representing the casino. The players, on the other hand, have a box where they receive two visible cards and can place the bets they wish -as long as they adapt to the maximum and minimum amounts previously fixed.
  2. Once the croupier deals the two cards to each player, he/she asks if he/she needs one more card.
  3. The players must clearly indicate it and ask for the card to reach 21 or as close as possible. Note that players have the possibility to double their bets after receiving their first two cards.
  4. In case of having blackjack the player wins and receives a payout of 3 to 2.
  5. The dealer must stand with a total value of 17 or more or take a card in case of a total of 16 or less.

However, if there is a tie with the dealer – in case he also has blackjack – then neither hand wins. If the cards add up to a value closer to 21 than the dealer’s, the player wins the game and receives the value of the bet.

Actions in the game

It is possible to perform various actions in the game, depending on the situation at hand. We see them:

  • Double the bets: There is the possibility of doubling the initial bet after receiving the first two cards. Some casinos only allow this if the sum so far is 9, 10 or 11, and the player will only receive one additional card.
  • Open games: In case a player receives two equal cards at the beginning it is possible to split them and open two parallel games to place two bets against the dealer (these must be equal). The player must place a second card in the first game and complement it before continuing with the next game. In case the cards repeated and split in two bets are two Aces, then he/she can only ask for one more card for each of these bets. Likewise, if you receive a Ten or a figure next to one of these aces, it would not be considered blackjack (even if the sum is 21, it is necessary that the amount is obtained with the sum of other cards for this purpose).
  • Insuring the game: In the event that the dealer’s first visible card is an Ace, then the rest of the players have the possibility of insuring the game by betting that he will get blackjack and placing up to half of the bet in a space known as “insurance”. In case the croupier gets the mentioned combination, the player loses his initial bet, but is paid 2 to 1 for the insurance bet. In case the dealer does not get a blackjack, the player loses his “insurance” bet.

Card values

The card values in blackjack are as follows:

  • Valet (Jack), Queen and King: 10
  • Ace: 11 or 1.
  • Remaining cards: Keep their value.

Blackjack is achieved when the first two cards are a 10 or any face card and an Ace.

Differences between the European and American versions of blackjack

It should be noted that depending on the casino there can be up to two different versions, the European version and the American version. The main difference between one and the other is in the dealer’s second card. In the case of the American version, after the dealer puts his first visible card on the table, he will draw the second card and it will be covered. Now, if with the uncovered card there is a possibility of getting blackjack, then he must check the second card before continuing and if he has it, he will obligatorily communicate it to the rest of the players. In the European version, on the contrary, the dealer’s second card is not dealt until the rest of the players have played their hands. That is to say, he draws his second card at the end – this implies that the player may have raised the initial bet without knowing the dealer’s cards and that the dealer gets blackjack, which is less advantageous for the players, compared to the American version.
