In this article we explain these simple characteristics of poker so that you can gradually become familiar with the game and eventually become an expert in the different types of poker card games. Read on for more information!
How many cards are in a deck of poker cards?
The poker deck has a total of 4 sub-divisions or suits, as these sub-divisions of cards are known, made up of 13 cards each. These are: 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 7, 8, 9, 10, J, Q, K and A. It is therefore a deck with a total of 52 cards. The suits of poker are different from each other, in addition, they vary in colour. They can be:
- Diamonds: 13 cards. Red
- Clubs: 13 cards. Black.
- Hearts: 13 cards. Red.
- Spades: 13 cards. Black.
The colour of the poker cards is used to make up the hands. Both red and black have the same value, however, a straight of the same colour – for example, 4 + 5 + 6 + 7 + 8 of hearts – has more value than a straight of mixed colours, even if it is higher. The value of poker cards varies, therefore, depending on the combination of cards, including the colour, pairs, double pairs, trios… It should also be noted that one or two jokers may be added to the total of poker cards, although in most forms of poker card games this is not usually allowed. This is usually the case in private games.
Different types of poker card games
After answering how many cards poker has and mentioning the value of poker cards, it is important to consider what the different types of poker card games are. You should bear in mind that, in general, the modality between one type of poker game and another varies according to the number of cards in the hand – private and community – as the streets progress until the showdown – the moment when the players show their cards and reveal their plays – is reached. These are the different types of poker card games that are the most popular and the most popular with bookmakers and online casinos.
Texas Hold’em is the most popular and famous poker game in the world, specifically the No Limit version. It should be noted that the different types of poker can be played depending on the way in which the bets are placed, i.e. if it is limit, no limit or pot limit; but also depending on the type of tournament, if it is Sit & Go, if they are multi-table tournaments, freerolls, satellites, with re-buys, steps, turbo or guaranteed tournaments; and depending on the investment, with real money or in practice. In Texas Hold’em a total of 5 cards are dealt, 2 for each player and 3 community cards which are revealed in each round.
This is another of the most popular poker games in existence. The participation between Omaha and Hold’em accounts for approximately 96% of players worldwide. Omaha has several variants known as Omaha Hi – each hand is taken by only one player – and Omaha Hi-Lo – there are two winning hands, the highest and the lowest. The main difference with Texas Hold’em is that each player receives a total of 4 cards from which they must choose 2 to make a hand of 5, adding the 3 community cards.
This is another of the different poker card games. Caribbean poker is characterised by fast-paced hand play. The player competes directly against the house and not against other players. It is therefore a game with very similar characteristics to blackjack. Bluffing is not used in this game and the aim is not to deduce the opponent’s strategy, although the objective remains the same: to have the best cards. The prize received in this case corresponds to the value of each hand, with the exception of minimum hands in which only the initial bet prize is received.
5 Card Poker
5 Card Poker – or 5 Card Draw – is another of the most popular variants. The aim of this game is to get the best possible hand after making a discard. In addition, there are no community cards – as in Hold’em and Omaha. The player must participate in two rounds of betting, one before the discard and one after it. When we talk about 5-card poker, we are dealing with a card game in which we can distinguish between two types of poker, depending on the previous agreement reached before the game starts. These are the Blinds and the Antes. The Antes version is the most popular. In this case, each player must pay a certain amount before receiving his 5 cards, while in the case of the Blinds, the two players to the left of the dealer are the ones who must place the bet. The Small Blind is the player immediately to the left of the dealer and the Big Blind is the player to the left of the Small Blind.
