Today there are many professional poker players and they all play at a high level. It is not for nothing that they have reached where they are, of course.
But some have been more than just good players and have gone on to become living legends of this game, winning a multitude of international championships and joining the list of award-winning professional poker players.
As a tribute and in order to bring together some of the best known faces of the world poker scene, we have compiled a short list of some of the best poker players in the world.
10. Justin Bonomo
Despite his youth, since he is only 35 years old, Justin Bonomo is considered one of the best poker players in the world. It is estimated that his net worth in winnings amounts to almost 50 million dollars and he has stood out for his role in the Super High Roller Bowl, as well as in the WSOP, where he has won the bracelet three times.
9. Doyle Brunson
For many, he has been an avant-gardist who deserves a position of honor among the great players of all times, being one of the best poker players who have populated the tables of the United States and the rest of the world.
However, the reality is that the position he occupies is not representative of his game, but other variables are taken into account to carry out the ranking. And the fact is that, during more than 50 years of career, Doyle Brunson has won more than 10 WSOP bracelets, two of them in consecutive Main Events (to remember the years 76 and 77, a golden decade where American poker legends coincided).
He is currently retired, but he can boast of having been one of the most influential figures of all time and one of the poker players with the highest winnings in his day, a merit within reach of very few.
8. Amarillo Slim
If we talk about legendary players and the golden age of American poker, we can not stop talking about Amarillo Slim, one of the most influential figures of today and always. He has been known for years for his bets off the tables, the famous prop bets so associated with his figure.
Amarillo Slim is part of the great pantheon of poker figures, a position he shares with great names like Chip Reese, Stu Ungar or Doyle Brunson himself. He died in 2012 at the age of 83, but he took with him four World Series bracelets, including the 1972 world championship, and since the same year of his farewell he is part of the Hall of Fame.
7. Johnny Chan
Although we talk about the best poker players in general, it is worth taking into account the context in which they developed because the World Series of Poker was not then what it is now.
Still, Johnny Chan was even considered the best poker player in the world in his golden age, before the boom of 2003, when Chan won two WSOP Main Events in a row and came in third on another occasion.
6. John Juanda
Known as “Luckbox”, Indochinese-born Juanda is one of the highest-earning poker players of his era. And all because of his innate ability to read the games properly. Not for nothing, John Juanda is in possession of five WSOP bracelets.
In 2015, he agreed to join the Poker Hall of Fame alongside fellow pro player Jennifer Harman, a two-time World Series of Poker bracelet winner.
5. Phil Ivey
Not only is he one of the best poker players in recent history, but he acquired worldwide fame thanks to his spontaneous reaction during a game of the show Poker After Dark against the actress and also player Jennifer Tilly.
The latter, after losing the hand, commented aloud her famous “I thought you had kings”, leaving the table stunned, especially Ivey, who could not hide his surprise.
But Phil Ivey not only starred in one of the most amusing anecdotes that have taken place at the poker tables in the modern history of the game: he is a legend. He has won no less than ten WSOP bracelets, and at the age of 38 he became the youngest player to reach the ten-championship barrier.
His game is restrained but daring, which has earned him the appreciation of both his fellow players and the public. This, together with his unmistakable character, has earned him the appreciation of the whole world and has led him to occupy one of the top positions in the rankings of the best poker players of all time.
4. Michael Mizrachi
He is one of the emerging figures who developed as a professional player after the boom of the 2000s. Thanks to five WSOP bracelets and two WPT titles, it is estimated that he has earnings worth almost 20 million dollars, being one of the poker players with the highest earnings of all the comparative.
3. Erik Seidel
His character has earned him the nickname at many gaming tables as “the humble one”, partly because of his character, which is neither voracious nor arrogant. However, under that layer of humility hides a predator, a poker legend who knows how to play his cards well and who has been winning tournaments for more than 30 years.
2. Phil Hellmuth
Arguably one of the best poker players in the world polarizes fans because of his extroverted character and body language so accentuated off the tables. You either love him or hate him, there is no middle ground, but outside of his character, he is an extremely competitive player and the numbers make him the best poker player in the world, with no less than fifteen WSOP bracelets. This has earned him the worldwide recognition of all poker fans.
1. Daniel Negreanu
Although he has not won as many bracelets as Hellmuth, his well-balanced game and his ability to not avoid answering opponents by word of mouth while managing to hide his true intentions make him for many the most complete poker player in the world.
In addition to being one of the poker players with the highest winnings since he began to stand out in the world poker championships, Daniel Negreanu has also been considered the best poker player in the world thanks to his closeness with the fans and with the specialized media, who have not hesitated to take an interest in his changes in his eating habits.
